California, 10 Safar 1436/3 December 2014 (MINA) – The University of California Student-Workers Union on Thursday will vote on a ballot initiative to back the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement.

The group is a local union of the United Auto Workers that covers 12,000 teaching assistants, tutors and other students.

The BDS movement is a pro-Palestinian campaign in support of Palestinian unions. Press tv quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting on Wednesday (3/12).

The ballot text called for the boycott until Israel “has complied with international law and respected the rights of Palestinians.”

The union wants the University of California system and the UAW international union to divest from companies that the pro-BDS caucus says they are “complicit in Israeli occupation of Palestine and its apartheid policies.”

In another move, Israeli conferences that back the Tel Aviv regime should be banned.

Last year, two academic groups — the American Studies Association and the Association for Asian American Studies — supported the boycott.

During the recent Israel war against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, Israeli warplanes targeted a number of schools and hospitals in defiance of the Geneva conventions that ban such attacks.

More than 2,100 Palestinians, over 500 of them children, lost their lives during the Israeli offensive. (T/P011/R03)
