Dr. Al-Othaimeen Elected as Secretary General of the OIC

Jeddah, 18 Safar 1438/18 November 2016 (MINA) – Foreign ministers of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministers, unanimously, approved Thursday, during an emergency meeting held in Makkah, the election of Dr. Yusuf bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen as the new Secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, based on the nomination of Saudi Arabia.

For his part, Dr Al-Othaymeen expressed deepest thanks and gratitude of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and the Deputy Crown Prince, on his nomination as Secretary-General of the Organization.

He stressed that this is great confidence delegated to him, praying that Allah, the Almighty to enable him to perform the mission in the service of the Islamic Ummah and promote solidarity amongst member states and bolstering joint Islamic action, further forward.

The post had fallen vacant after the resignation on health grounds of Iyad Madani effective Oct. 31, 2016.

“Al-Othaimeen’s election was unanimous,” Maha Akeel, director of Information Department at the OIC, told Arab News.

“Al-Othaimeen took charge on Thursday from acting Secretary-General Abdullah Alem.”

Founded in 1969, the organization has 57 member states and acts as the “collective voice of the Muslim world (T/R07/R01)
