Kuala Lumpur, 26 Rabiul Akhir 1438/25 January 2017 (MINA) – Malaysia ranks at the 55th spot from among 176 countries in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2016, according to Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M).
In ASEAN, Malaysia is among the top three, after Singapore and Brunei.
TI-M president Datuk Akhbar Satar was quoted by Bernama as saying Malaysia scored 49 out of 100 on the CPI’s survey.
The CPI scores and ranks are determined by the perceived level of corruption in the country’s public sector on a scale from 0 (perceived to be the most highly corrupted) to 100 (perceived to be very clean).
Akhbar said in comparison with other ASEAN countries, Malaysia ranked below Singapore (7th) and Brunei (41) but above Indonesia (90), the Philippines (101), Thailand (101), Vietnam (113), Laos (123), Myanmar (136) and Cambodia (156).
“In 2015, Malaysia was at 54th position and an additional nine countries in CPI 2016 had contributed to Malaysia’s position in the CPI last year as some of them were ranked above this country,” he added.
Akhbar was disclosing Malaysia’s CPI 2016 result at a press conference here Wednesday.
He said Denmark and New Zealand shared the first spot with 90 CPI scores each while Finland, Sweden and Switzerland joined the top five countries in the index list.
The bottom last countries are Somalia, South Sudan, North Korea and Syria, with Libya, Yemen and Sudan sharing the same spot.
Akhbar said TI-M also called on the government to implement its recommendations in order to eliminate corruption.
Among the recomendations are the establishement of public central registries of company beneficial ownership; introducing the corporate liability provision into the current legislation; and making the ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System a pre-requisite for all government suppliers.
