Indonesia Wins Gold Medal at Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympics in Beijing

Beijing, MINA – Indonesian young generation has once again demonstrated their achievements and made Indonesia proud in the international competition, the 12th International High School Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), which took place in Beijing on November 3 – 11 2018.

In this competition, Indonesian national team consists of five high school students from various provinces managed to score brilliant achievements by winning one gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Before the announcement of the final results of competition, Indonesian National Team, which consists of two team leaders and one observer, had been received by the Deputy Chief of Representative of Indonesia, Listyowati at the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, according to the Foreign Ministry official Wednesday.

The ten-day competition was participated attended by 209 students from 39 countries and they were required to go through three main rounds which were competed in this event.

The theoretical round is held in the Conference Room, Holiday Inn Resort on November 5, 2018, followed by a team competition round and observation round consisting of two parts, namely day time and night time on November 6, 2018.

Then, the round of data analysis lasted five hours on November 8, 2018 at the Conference Room, Holiday Inn Resort.

In theoretical round, all students wrestle with eleven questions consisting of two True-False questions, seven short-medium essay questions and two long essay questions for five hours.Meawhile, in the round of data analysis a number of two long questions must be completed in five hours.

The students’ intelligence and resilience are truly tested in these rounds. On November 6th, students started a mixed team competition from various countries. One team of students was asked to determine the height of hill behind the Holiday Inn. They were given two days to resolve the problem.

The students’ achievements in this competition are determined by the students’ total performance in the three rounds. Students entitled to win gold, silver, bronze, or other awards, are determined by the total value of their achievement.

In the end, 26 gold medalists, 52 silver medalists, 35 bronze medals and 34 honorable mentioned were selected.

All students from Indonesia are Nathanael Beta Budiman from SMAN 2 Jakarta,, Muhammad Ikhsan Kusrachmansyah from National Unity High School, DI Yogyakarta, Ahmad Izuddin from SMAN Plus Riau Province, Riau, Made Yongga Anggar Pangestu from SMAN 1 Mataram, NTB, and Muhammad Fajril Afkaar Ali from Kharisma Bangsa High School, Banten won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
