House of Representatives Encourages Acceleration of Geothermal Energy Development

Jakarta, MINA – The House of Representatives encourages the government to accelerate the development of geothermal energy which the sources are found in various regions in Indonesia.

“Our geothermal energy is quite a lot but we have not been used it maximally so this becomes something we have to think about,” said Deputy Speaker Agus Hermanto in a press release, Jakarta on Monday.

According to him, there must be a real will to encourage the development. Antara News reported.

He argues that one of the obstacles to geothermal development is that many licensed energy developers have not continued into the exploration phase.

In Addition, he continued, other issues including the lack of data to the development stage.

Previously, the Government through the Directorate General of New Energy, Renewable and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the ESDM Ministry identified, currently there are five major obstacles of geothermal investment in Indonesia.

According to the Director General of EBTKE, ESDM Rida Mulyana, the five main obstacles are the location of geothermal potential located in conservation forest, community resistance, price issues, funding and licensing processes related to geothermal business.

The resources and geothermal reserves in Indonesia are one of the largest in the world with potentials in excess of 29 GW and around 1.7 GW has been utilized into electrical energy today.(L/R04/P2)
