Jakarta, 10 Dzulhijjah 1435/4 October 2014 (MINA) – A newly inaugurated member of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), Fahira Idris said she will seek action to remove all forms of “Hijab Discrimination” in Indonesia.

The next programs that we remain close to society and be a mouthpiece for society. With my election as DPD member, I will attempt to make Jakarta city friendly to women and prosecute all forms of hijab discrimination in Indonesia,” Fahira Idris said after Preliminary Session of the Members of Indonesian Parliament (MPR) 2014-2019 period, Wednesday.

In regard to the hijab, as the Commission member Education and Cadre of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), she said MUI will soon hold a Conference on Indonesian Hijab in October 2014.

The conference is part of the World Hijab Solidarity Day celebration which falls every 4th of September, she told to Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).

She said, there are still cases of banning the hijab in the report received by MUI Indonesia.

She lamented, there is still a ban on Muslim women for wearing the hijab in some part of Indonesia even though the country has the largest number of Muslims in the world.

The grand daughter of the former Chairman of the MUI, KH. Hassan Basri explained, Indonesia Hijab Solidarity Conference is expected to be a forum of advocacy for Muslim women in Indonesia who are still discriminated against in their daily life for wearing the hijab.

She also said, as a member of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), she will be the mouthpiece of society though with a limited authority of the DPD.

She will seek to assist society through coordination with the other agencies and institutions.

Anti-Alcohol Movement

Fahira, who is also anti-alcohol activist, stated that she is committed to provide inspiration for young people to initiate Anti-Alcohol Movement (GENAM) which consists of 120 organizations and communities.

She hopes that this movement will become a place of movement morally, socially, and culturally to rescue Indonesian youth from the dangers of alcohol.
“I encourage local regulations on liquor,” said Fahira.

She expects, Indonesia should become an anti-alcohol state with its younger generation dignified, strong, and accomplished without alcohol because alcohol opens the doors to disobedience and can destroy the moral of a nation.

For programs in Jakarta, Fahira will try to make Jakarta city proper for the child and friendly for women.

The preliminary session of the 2014-2019 MPR members lasts from 1 to 3 October 2014, with the agenda of the inauguration of the MPR members, the election and the inauguration of the MPR Chairman (the Speaker) for 2014 to 2019 period.
