BMKG: Equinox Is Ordinary Phenomenon, Community Called to Calm
Jakarta, MINA – Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) responded to circulation of news about the existence of Equinox phenomenon, where the sun reaches to the closest point of earth. It might increase extreme temperatures causing sun strokes and dehydration.
BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo explained on Monday March 25, equinox was one of astronomical phenomena in which the sun crosses the equator and periodically takes place twice a year on March 21 and September 23.
“When this phenomenon takes place, the sun with earth has closest consequence, tropical region around the equator will get maximum solar radiation,” Prabowo said in a press release on Monday.
However, according to Prabowo, this phenomenon does not always result in drastic or extreme air temperature. “In general, the average maximum temperature in Indonesian region is in range of 32-36 ° C,” he said.
Based on BMKG observation, Deputy of Meteorology said that the highest maximum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 37.6 ° C in Meulaboh, Aceh.
“Equinox is not a phenomenon such as heat waves that occur in Europe, Africa, and America, which is an incident that increases extreme temperatures outside the ordinary and lasts for quite a long time,” said Prabowo.
In response to this, Prabowo urged the public to remain calm, no need to worry about the impact of equinox as mentioned in developing issue.
He said generally the weather conditions in Indonesian region tend to be still wet. Some parts of Indonesia are currently entering a period.
“It’s good for people to anticipate weather conditions that are quite hot by increasing their immune system and maintaining family health and environment,” he concluded. (T/Sj/P2)
