OIC’s 1st Summit on Science and Technology to Be Held in September

Jeddah, MINA – The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, OIC, on Thursday said that its first Summit on Science and Technology to be held in Kazakhstan next September is the “biggest and most prominent” gathering for discussing scientific issues.

The summit, which will be held from 7th to 11th September in Astana, with the participation of state members’ leaders, is considered a “qualitative evolvement” in the work of the organisation. Its main purpose is to develop an economic structure for the science and technology industry, the OIC said in a statement carried by Kuwait News Agency, KUNA.

Competition from Islamic countries is much lower as compared to developed countries, it added.

The OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Science and Technology Ambassador, Muhammad Naeem Khan, stated that this summit is the first of its kind in which the organisation will develop a strategy for science and technology for the next ten years. It will include priorities and the possible accomplishments in the field. Leaders of state members will review these priorities and include them in their countries’ development strategies.

The summit is considered extremely significant as it is the first to be held in a central Asian country. The Member States pointed out that Asian nations have been members only since 1991. (T/RS5/RS1)
