4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Sumedang, Indonesia on New Year’s Eve

Jakarta, MINA – An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 rocked the Sumedang area, West Java, Indonesia, according to CNN Indonesia.

According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the earthquake occurred on Sunday at 08.34 p.m.

“#Earthquake Mag: 4.8, 31-Dec-2023 20:34:24WIB, Lok: 6.85LS, 107.87E (5 km North West of KAB-SUMEDANG-JABAR), Kedlmn: 10 Km,” said the BMKG statement on X.

BMKG stated that this earthquake information prioritizes speed, so the results of data processing are not yet stable and can change as the data is complete.

Previously, an earthquake also rocked Sumedang today at 02.35 p.m. At that time the earthquake that rocked Sumedang had a magnitude of 4.1.

BMKG stated that the shallow tectonic earthquake that rocked Sumedang Regency, West Java was suspected to be the result of active fault activity.

“A shallow crustal earthquake shook Sumedang with a magnitude of 4.1 with a depth of 10 kilometers triggered by active fault activity (temporary information),” said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a written statement. (T/RE1/P2)
