Theresa May takes over as Britain's prime minister Wednesday, tasked with steering the country through the Brexit crisis.

 

London, 08 Syawal 1437/14 July 2016 (MINA) – Theresa May, who has been interior minister for six years, became Britain’s new prime minister on Wednesday, accepting an invitation to govern from Queen Elizabeth II after the resignation of David Cameron, WAM reported.

“I have just been to Buckingham Palace where Her Majesty the Queen has asked me to form a new government and I accepted”, May said in a speech outiside10 Downing Street, vowing to “build a better Britain not just for the privileged few.”

She appointed former London Mayor Boris Johnson as UK foreign secretary.

Johnson replaces Philip Hammond who was named as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Mrs. May promised to lead a “one-nation” government dedicated to social justice and making “Britain a country that works for everyone.”

Alluding to negotiations over Britain’s exit from the European Union, May said, “we face a time of great national change.”

May said Britain would “rise to the challenge” and forge “a bold new positive role” in the world. (T/R07/R01)
