JORDAN PUSHES FOR PALESTINE RESOLUTION AT UNSC

Jordan, 10 Shafar 1436/3 December 2014 (MINA) – Jordan has announced an upcoming meeting to discuss a final peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians that may be presented to the UN Security Council (UNSC) in the coming weeks.

Jordan’s Ambassador to the UN Dina Kawar said on Tuesday that she will meet with representatives from Arab countries and Security Council members to determine whether enough support exists for a “unified text” on advancing Palestinian-Israeli peace, Press TV quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting, Wednesday.

A draft resolution would then be presented to the UNSC later this month or in January if an agreement can be reached during the upcoming meeting, Kawar said.

“We will be sitting together and seeing how the possibilities of working with everybody to get as close as possible to a unified text,” the ambassador noted.

Her remarks came a day after Palestinian envoy to the UN Riyad Mansour said a draft resolution on the creation of the state of Palestine will be presented to the UNSC over the next few days.

Mansour said the text, which is being shepherded by France, is also expected to lay out a timeframe to discuss a resolution on a Palestinian-Israeli settlement.

The draft resolution, approved by the Arab League in September, calls for ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories by November 2016.

In the past few months, the Palestinian national unity government has been pushing for a UN resolution that determines the borders of the future Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 lines. The motion has drawn outcry from Israel.

Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem Al-Quds and the Gaza Strip and are demanding Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories. Tel Aviv, however, has refused to return to the 1967 borders and is unwilling to discuss the issue of al-Quds. (T/P002/P3)
