Indonesia condemns Israel for Closing the Temporary International Presence in Hebron

Jakarta, MINA – The Government of the Republic of Indonesia condemns the unilateral decision of Israel to close and end the mandate of international civilian observer mission “Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH)” in the Palestinian territory of Hebron, West Bank, which is under Israeli occupation.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday (7/2),  TIPH was established in 1994 based on an agreement between Israel and Palestine, and as mandated by UN Security Council Resolution 904.

Since its inception, TIPH has served as an important mechanism to ensure protection for Palestinian civilians in Hebron, particularly against violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. Therefore, maintaining the mandate of TIPH is crucial to sustain the fragile situation and prevent escalation of conflicts.

Indonesia calls upon all Parties to act in accordance with international law and existing international agreements, and refrain themselves from undertaking provocative actions.

Indonesia reiterates that it is an obligation of Israel (as the occupying power) to protect Palestinian civilians in Hebron, as well as in all Palestinian territories under Israeli occupation, as mandated by international law.

As part of Indonesia’s continued support to the Palestinian cause, Indonesia, together with Palestine and other partner countries initiated a closed meeting in the UN Security Council  to discuss this unilateral act by the Israeli goverment that will further jeopardize the efforts toward peace and the realization of two-state solution.

Indonesia also extends appreciation to the TIPH’s countributing countries and members of the observer mission for their service over the past 22 years, including those who lost their lives while carrying out their duties.(T/R04/P2)
