INDONESIA HAS 58 TYPES POTENTIAL LIVESTOCK
Padang, 28 Dhulhijjah 1436/11 October 2015 (MINA) – Indonesia has 58 species of local livestock that could potentially be developed into a profitable commodity in the country, especially in strengthening the national character in the era of the ASEAN Economic Community 2016, said Director General of Animal Husbandry and Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Muladno.
“The 58 types consist of cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, and horses,” he said in Padang, Saturday. Antaranews reported as quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).
For farmers, the potential local livestock could be a profitable commodity, especially in strengthening national character in face of the ASEAN Economic Community 2016.
Some expert said comparative research and studies are needed for the sake of rapid advancement in the development of local livestock.
He mentioned, for cattle, there are eleven types, include Bali, Madura, Aceh, hybrid, Ongole and of West Sumatra coast cattle.
For buffalo, there are eight types such as Sumbawa, Moa, Kuntu, Toraja and Pampangan buffalo.
For Goats, he said there are seven types. The most famous and potential one is Etawah goat.
While for sheep, there are seven types of sheep and for horse, there are three types, but the most popular are Sumbawa and Gayo.
“For chicken, actually there are thirty-one species but the ministry just approved nine types,” he added.
The nine types include pelung, balenggek, kedu, Nunukan and crow species.
While duck, it has 13 species of which have unique characteristics such as Bayang, Pitalah, Mojosari and Gotu Kola.
