Kairo, 28 Ramadan 1436/15 July 2015 (MINA) – Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri criticised the position of a number of Western countries on Monday over how they are dealing with Syria opposition.

In a press conference held in Cairo with his Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni, Shukri specifically condemned the Washington Post because it published an article about Al-Nusra Front of Syria.

“We do not understand the position of certain capitals and important political centres, which maintain contacts with a number of organisations,” said Shukri. Middle East Monitor (Memo)  reports as quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).

He called such contacts “contradictions” because the capitals in question call such organisations “extremist moderates”.

“Such contacts fuel the desire of these organisations to continue their terrorism as they feel they are getting international recognition,” he claimed.

Shukri pointed out that his country has been taking the lead in taking part in any international alliance that fights terrorism.

The Egyptian minister reiterated the importance of the international community’s support for Egypt’s war on terror.

Gentiloni visited Egypt in the wake of an attack that targeted the Italian consulate in Cairo.

Shukri said that Cairo sympathises with Italy but stressed that Egypt is able to protect all diplomatic delegations and missions in the capital.(T/P002/R03)
