Rafah, 23 Jumadil Awwal 1437/2 March 2016 (MINA) – The Egyptian Ministry of Defence said in a statement that it discovered and destroyed 12 tunnels on the border with the Gaza Strip in February.

The Egyptian authorities have tightened security measures at its land and sea borders with Gaza following the ousting of President Mohamed Morsi by its military, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

The Egyptian army began in September last year pumping large quantities of seawater along the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to destroy the tunnels.

Residents of Gaza rely on the tunnels to alleviate the difficulties of living under the blockade, using them to smuggle in food, supplies and fuel.(T/P008/R04)
