Cairo, 29 Jumadil Akhir 1436/18 April 2015 (MINA) – Egypt has asked the EU to freeze the assets of two Muslims Brotherhood leaders however they have not received a response yet, an official revealed yesterday.

Speaking to the Anadolu Agency by telephone, Judge Adel Fahmy, assistant Attorney General for International Cooperation, refused to give details of which Brotherhood leaders were in question or when the request was submitted.

“The request was presented based on the investigations conducted by the public prosecutor, for two people who are unknown in the media, but they have a positive impact through offering financial support to the demonstrations conducted by Muslim Brotherhood supporters as well as the sabotage operations that the country is witnessing,” he explained, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

It was not possible to get an immediate response from the EU regarding the issue.

Fahmy also revealed that “there is no judicial cooperation with Turkey since it opposed the revolution of 30 June 2013 and harboured Brotherhood leaders who are wanted for justice in Egypt “.

He pointed out that “after [Mohamed] Morsi’s ousting on 3 July, 2013, a judicial exchange agreement was cancelled to close the judicial cooperation with Turkey.”

Relations between Cairo and Ankara have strained since the overthrow of Morsi. On 24 November 2013, Egypt took the decision to consider the Turkish ambassador “persona non grata” and reduce the level of diplomatic relations to the level of chargé d’affaires, Ankara responded similarly. (T/P002/P3)
