New York, 13 Dzulhijjah 1436/27 September 2015 (MINA) – President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in New York on Saturday, where he is scheduled to attend the 70th Session of the United Nations’ General Assembly and the Palestinian flag-raising ceremony at the UN headquarters.

Presidential spokesperson, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said that Abbas is scheduled to meet with world leaders as well as with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, where they will discuss the latest developments in the region, particularly the latest Israeli escalations in Jerusalem.

Abbas will also meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry, where they will discuss the latest developments in the region and the world, including the political process with Israel.

To be noted, Abbas will also attend Palestinian flag-raising ceremony at the UN headquarters.

On September 10, the United Nations overwhelmingly voted in favor of raising a flag of Palestine at its headquarters in New York City in a symbolic move highlighting Palestinian aspirations for statehood, said Al-Jazeera.

A resolution was adopted on Thursday evening with 119 in favor, eight voting against – including Israel and the United States – and 45 abstentions, it said.

The General Assembly passed a resolution allowing the flags of Palestine and the Holy See, the only two countries to have a “Non-Member Observer State” status, to be hoisted alongside full member states.(T/P008/R03)
