Jakarta,18 Jumadil Awwal 1438/15 February 2017 (MINA) – The Indonesian government has condemned the launch of a long-range missile conducted by North Korea on Sunday that could disrupt peace and stability in the region.

“Indonesia strongly deplores the missile launch carried out by North Korea on Feb 12. It runs counter to the spirit of creating peace and stability in the region and at the global level,” Antara quoted Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir as informing journalists at Gedung Nusantara II of the Legislative Assembly, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

North Korea, on Monday, claimed it had successfully tested a medium- and long-range ballistic missile and declared developments in its arsenal. Pukguksong-2, a new type of missile, was launched towards the sea on Sunday morning.

The Korean Central News Agency stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had overseen the launch of Pukguksong-2, which reportedly has the capability of delivering warheads.

The Indonesian government has emphasized that the missile test was contrary to North Koreas obligations to the United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions, in particular Resolution No 2270 of 2016 and Resolution No 2331 of 2016.

To this end, the Indonesian government has urged North Korea to fully meet its international obligations, including implementing the UN resolutions. Indonesia has also called on all parties to refrain from actions that could raise tensions in the region.

“Indonesia has also urged to immediately resume the six-party talks to ensure peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula,” Nasir remarked.

The six-party talks are a series of meetings held to seek a peaceful solution to the security problems arising as a result of North Korea’s nuclear weapon program. The six countries involved in the talks were North Korea, South Korea, the US, Russia, China, and Japan.  (T/RS05/RS01)
