Doha, MINA – A controversial map published by Israel claiming historical territorial rights has drawn condemnation from Qatar and Jordan, raising regional tensions, Palestine Chronicle reported.

Qatar and Jordan have strongly condemned the publication of a map by the Israeli government claiming historical territorial rights for Israel in occupied Palestine and large parts of Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

The map was posted on social media by the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Arabic-language account and “shows the biblical boundaries of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judea, which according to the Bible extended to areas east of the Jordan River,” the Jerusalem Post reported.

The caption of the post claims that “the Kingdom of Israel existed 3,000 years ago.” Threat to Regional Peace

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry condemned “in the strongest terms the historical Israeli maps allegedly published by official accounts affiliated with the occupation government, which reportedly include parts of the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.”

The ministry said it considered “the publication of these maps a flagrant violation of international legitimate resolutions and the provisions of international law.”

The ministry warned that the publication of these maps “will hinder the chances of peace in the region, especially amid the ongoing brutal war on the Gaza Strip.”

The ministry stressed the need for the international community “to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities by pressuring the Israeli occupation to comply with international legitimate resolutions and confront its expansionist ambitions in Arab lands.”

Spokesperson for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Dr. Sufian Qudah also strongly condemned the publication and reiterated Jordan’s firm rejection of such provocative policies and statements, the country’s Roya news agency reported.

He stressed that these actions aim to deny the Palestinian people their right to an independent and sovereign state along the pre-June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, the report said.

Qudah stressed that “these actions do not harm Jordan or diminish the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people” and denounced the claims as a flagrant violation of international norms and laws.

In March 2023, right-wing Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich delivered a speech at an event in Paris while standing next to a map of Greater Israel depicting Jordan as part of the self-proclaimed Jewish state, Anadolu news agency reported.

For decades, Israel has occupied territories in Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, rejecting international calls to withdraw and opposing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital based on the pre-1967 borders, the report added. (T/RE1/P2)
