Ramallah, 5 Jumadal Awwal 1436/24 February  2015 (MINA) – A Palestinian captive held in Raymond jail stabbed an Israeli officer at noon Monday (23/2), the Palestinian Prisoners Society said.

It added that the incident was in protest at the Israeli punitive measures against Palestinian detainees which have recently been escalated in conjunction with the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) arbitrary transfers of prisoners, Palestinian Information Center (PIC) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

The Society pointed out, in a brief statement, that the prisoner who stabbed the Israeli officer is called Hamzah Abu Sowan, a 20-year-old man from Gaza city.

Israeli wardens severely beat up the Palestinian prisoner on the spot after which he was taken to hospital, the statement added.

Meanwhile, the IPS notified prisoners of Nafha that a state of alert has been declared in Nafha, Raymond and Eshel jails following the stabbing incident.

The Director of Prisoners’ Information Office, Abdurrahman Shadid, charged the IPS, particularly the director of its intelligence, of being fully responsible for the tension prevailing in Israeli jails.

Shadid called on all human rights organizations to shoulder their responsibilities in protecting the rights of prisoners and to demand an end to the IPS punitive policy against the Palestinian detainees. (T/P006/R03)
