Police Bar Zakir Naik from Holding Talk in Malacca
Dr. Zakir Naik
Kuala Lumpur, 04 Rajab 1437/11 April 2016 (MINA) – Police have decided to disallow a talk by Mumbai-born Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik on Hinduism and Islam, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar announced on Monday.
The nation’s top cop said such forums would not benefit a multiracial society like Malaysia’s and explained, “In talks such as these, one tends to belittle another’s religion so I therefore advise the organisers to call off the next lecture.”
Khalid also told reporters police would contact the organiser and order them to cancel the forum, titled, “Similarities Between Hinduism and Islam”, scheduled for April 17 at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.
Earlier Khalid tweeted that police decided to disallow the forum in their efforts to preserve public order and maintain racial harmony.
Khalid’s announcement today comes in the wake of the backlash following news that Zakir, who has been accused of preaching hate against those of other religions, was in Malaysia for a series of talks.
He gave a talk in Terengganu last night, Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) quoted freemalaysiatoday.com as reporting.
MIC Youth yesterday said they would lodge police reports across the country urging the authorities to stop Zakir from holding any further talks.
The wing’s chief, C Sivarraajh pointed out that Zakir had been banned from speaking in other countries as well, including Britain and Canada, as his teachings had the potential to incite violence and terrorism.
Three days ago, human rights NGO Hindraf Makkal Sakthi, demanded the government immediately cancel Zakir’s upcoming programmes. (T/R07/R01)
