Palestinians to Push for a Boycott of Countries That Move Embassy to Jerusalem
Ramallah, MINA – The Palestinian Authority is going to push for a boycott of any country that moves its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, WAFA quoted Foreign Minister Riyad Malki as saying on Thursday.
Speaking to Voice of Palestine radio, Malki said he would officially ask the five Arab foreign ministers who will participate in the January 6 meeting in Jordan to implement the Amman Summit resolutions of 1980, which included political and economic boycott of countries that move their embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
He said the upcoming meeting will discuss mechanism for action in a number of world capitals to urge them to pressure the US to back down from its decision on Jerusalem and issue clear and firm statements to prevent any country from following Washington’s example.
He said that if the Arab countries combined first boycott Guatemala after it announced that it will move its embassy to Jerusalem, then this decision will hurt it financially because it annually exports 90% of its cardamom pods to Arab countries.
Malki said President Mahmoud Abbas has given clear instructions to reach countries Israel is trying to pressure to get them to move their embassy to Jerusalem in order to prevent them from doing this.
Malki also said that efforts are underway to reapply for full membership for Palestine at the United Nations, but that the leadership is waiting until after the Christmas holidays and the new composition of Security Council early next year when six new non-permanent members join.
He pointed to the need to start consultation with these member states to guarantee nine votes in the Security Council to ensure the passage of the resolution, pointing out on the other hand that in the event of an American veto, other mechanisms will be discussed. (T/RS5/RS1)
