OIC Chief Discusses Growing Islamophobia With UNESCO Director General

Jeddah, 10 Rabi’ul Akhir 1438/9 January 2016 (MINA) – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen held a bilateral meeting with Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova, at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris last Friday.

The two sides had useful and extensive exchange of views on various international and regional issues of common interest, including the protection of cultural heritage in the event of conflict, IINA reported.

These also include the fight against violent extremism and radicalism, the need to promote intercultural and inter-faith dialogue to achieve mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and sustainable peace as well as combating the growing phenomenon of Islamophobia.

Both sides agreed to continue to work closely on mutual issues, promote bilateral cooperation and update the cooperation agreement signed between the OIC and UNESCO in 1979.(T/R04/RS05)
