Jakarta, MINA – The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) has officially included the empowerment of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in its eight priority programs for 2025-2029, known as Asta Protas Kemenag Berdampak. One key program is the establishment of the Directorate General (Ditjen) of Pesantren, aimed at enhancing the role of Islamic boarding schools in education and community economic empowerment.

Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar, during the program launch in Jakarta on Thursday (March 6), emphasized Kemenag’s commitment to strengthening the independence of pesantren, including through business incubation assistance.

“We aim to increase the number of pesantren-owned enterprises (BUMP) to 5,000,” he stated.

The upcoming Directorate General of Pesantren is also expected to ensure that Pesantren graduates gain national recognition and competitiveness within the formal education system.

To further enhance pesantren graduates’ global competitiveness, Kemenag plans to establish international pesantren.

“Pesantren must become centers of excellence, not only in religious studies but also in economic empowerment and character development,” said the Minister.

Through these initiatives, Kemenag hopes that pesantren will continue to evolve as adaptive educational institutions that make a broader contribution to the nation and the Muslim community. []
