Egypt to Open Rafah Crossing for Four Days as of Wednesday

Egypt reopens Rafah crossing.

Cairo,MINA – Egypt would open the Rafah border crossing with Palestine’s Gaza Strip in both directions for four days starting Wednesday, local media reported.

The crossing would be opened for humanitarian purposes and to allow stranded Palestinians to return to the Strip, the official news agency MENA reported Tuesday.

The Rafah border crossing is the main gateway to the outside world for 1.8 million Palestinians living in Israeli-besieged Gaza, and is the only crossing point not controlled by Israel.

The Gaza Strip, which has suffered a crippling Israeli-Egyptian air/land/sea blockade since 2007, has seven border crossings linking it to the outside world.

Six of these are controlled by Israel, while the seventh — the Rafah crossing — is controlled by Egypt, which has kept it tightly sealed for the most part of time. (T/RS5/RS1)
