Catalan Gov’t: 90 Percent Voted in Favour of Separation from Spain

Madrid, MINA – The Regional Catalan government declared Monday that 90 percent of respondents voted in favour of a split from Spain’s motherland despite a suspension from the spanish Constitutional Court.

Catalan government spokesperson Jordi Turull said in a press conference that 2.262 million voters took part in the refurendum representing 42 percent of 5.342 million total eligible voters while 58 percent abstained, according to statistics, KUNA reported.

Turull added that less than 27 percent were not allowed to vote after the crackdown on polling stations by police. Minors and foreigners were also banned from voting.

Such participation is lower than the 2014 referendum when 2.3 million voted yes at that time.
