No Damage Reported After Strong Quake Hits Off Indonesia

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called “the Pacific Ring of Fire.”

Jakarta, 17 Ramadan 1438/12 June 2017 (MINA) – A powerful quake struck off Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia earlier Monday, triggering panic but there have been no preliminary reports of damage or casualties, officials said.

The meteorology and geophysics agency (BMKG) reported that the quake was at 6.3 magnitude and centered at 179 km southwest Sukabumi district of West Java Province with the depth at 10 km under seabed, but the shakes of the quake were felt in nearby Jakarta city, official of the agency Dedy Sugianto told Xinhua by phone.

The quake was not potential for tsunami, the official added.

The national disaster management agency (BNPB) said that the residents in Jakarta and some other cities in West Java province rushed out of building and houses, but there are no reports of building or houses damaged and casualties.

The USGS reported that the quake was at 5.6 magnitude.
