OIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT WILL DISCUSS CONQUEST OF SPACE

Jeddah, 29 Jumadil Awwal 1436/20 March 2015 (MINA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) plans to hold its first Science and Technology Summit, in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, in last quarter of 2015, to discuss the possibility of conquest of space in the near future as part of a joint program of the OIC member states.

During its preparatory meeting in Jeddah, the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) submitted a working paper, recommending the formation of a team of scientists and engineers who have the experience and vision to carry out the mission, International Islamic News Agency (IINA) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

The working paper revealed that there is a tendency to establish large joint programs to promote and take advantage of a multi-disciplinary research in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, climate change, satellites, oceanography, earth sciences and technological innovation.

The working paper urged the OIC countries to design and launch mini satellites for remote sensing applications like crop estimates, disaster management, rescue at sea and weather forecast.

It also urged them to use the remote sensing applications in experiments on space plasma, ionized particles, magnetic poles shift, verification of communication data, biological experiments and testing materials under space conditions, in addition to mapping of resources and the oceans and seas around the coasts of the OIC countries, and sending joint teams to Antarctica.

COMSTECH believes that the participation of many countries in designing, implementing and operating these programs collectively will contribute to the reduction of the financial burden on the participating states, and will lead to better cooperation and collective capability building that represents the vision of all the OIC member countries.
