MOSCOW READY TO SPONSOR SYRIAN PEACE TALKS
Moscow, 24 Safar 1436/17 December 2014 (MINA) – On Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed Russian optimism regarding Syrian upcoming peace talks.
Delegations from the Syrian opposition and the Assad regime are expected to hold peace talks in Russia early next year, ARA News quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.
The Russian government is making efforts to renew Syrian peace talks which started in Geneva last February, without bringing about any change in the position of both side of the conflict.
“So far from what we hear from the majority of our interlocutors, both in the opposition and the government of Syria, we can be optimistic that this process (of talks) could at least be attempted early next year,” Lavrov said in an interview with France 24 TV.
Lavrov expressed hopes that the factions of the Syrian opposition would reach an agreement before holding direct meetings with officials of the Assad regime. (T/P001/R04)
