Athens, MINA – Boats from Greece sailed on Sunday from the port on Syros Island to join the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza, a large-scale international civilian fleet aimed at breaking the Israeli blockade and delivering humanitarian aid.
The ship Oksigono is crewed entirely by Greeks, while the Ilektra carries volunteers from Greece and other countries, according to Anadolu Agency.
Support events were held throughout the day across the island, with hundreds of people gathering at the port to cheer on the crews. As the ships departed, the crowd waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans like “Freedom for Gaza,” “The resistance will win,” and “Crush Israel.”
Officials from March to Gaza, Greece, a pro-Palestinian movement coordinating solidarity actions in the country, emphasized that the purpose of the Greek ships is to help break the Israeli blockade on Gaza, mobilize the international community, and contribute to the establishment of a safe corridor for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The fleet is noted for sending a strong message of solidarity to the global public by highlighting the humanitarian catastrophe in the enclave.

The Global Sumud Flotilla began assembling last month, with ships departing from Barcelona, Spain, and Genoa, Italy. The organizers describe this mission as unprecedented, noting that previous efforts involved only single ships that were intercepted by Israel and their passengers deported.
This convoy is the largest of its kind, aiming to challenge the blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, where conditions of starvation have been rampant due to Israel’s months-long closure of all crossings.
The Israeli army has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children, since October 2023. The relentless bombing has made the enclave uninhabitable and has led to widespread famine and the spread of disease. []
