OIC Condemns Attack on UN Peacekeeping Base in Mali

Jeddah, MINA – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday condemned strongly a “terrorist attack” on a United Nations peacekeeping base in Timbuktu in northern Mali late Monday that killed seven people, including five Malian security guards.

In todaya statement issued , OIC Secretary General Yousef Al-Othaimeen expressed his strong denouncement of “this terrorist act”, considering it as a new threat that impedes the implementation of the Algiers agreement for peace and reconciliation,KUNA reported, citing a statement issued Tuesday.

He voiced his concerns about the repeated terrorist acts in Timbuktu and dangers posed by the terrorist groups to stability, safety and security of Al-Sahel’s countries.

He called on the international community to confront such terriorist acts through providing financial support for Mali and all countries of the region.

The OIC chief lauded the big role of the UN peacekeeping forces, urging authorities to arrest criminals and bring them to justice, the statement noted.

He affirmed OIC’s unwavering stance in support of restoring peace and development in Mali, offering his condolences to victims’ families and the Malian government, and wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded. (T/RS5/RS1)
