US Announces Extra $185 Million in Aid for Rohingya

New York, MINA – The United States on Monday announced additional $185 million in humanitarian aid for displaced Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh and Myanmar.

According to UNA, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Washington would give an extra $185 million in humanitarian aid, of which $156 million would go to refugees and host communities in Bangladesh, taking its total for the crisis to nearly $389 million in the past year.

Myanmar’s military crackdown in Rakhine state, which started in late August 2017, drove more than 700,000 of the largely stateless Rohingya minority across the border into neighboring Bangladesh.

Last week, UN investigators renewed their call for the investigation and prosecution of Myanmar’s top military officials for genocide and war crimes, publishing an exhaustive account of atrocities allegedly committed against Rohingya Muslims and other minorities.

The US announcement came after a closed-door ministerial meeting on the Rohingya crisis hosted by British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly currently being held in New York.(R/R04/P2)
