Gaza, 27 Rabiul Awwal 1438/27 December 2016 (MINA) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the UN agency responsible for providing services to some five million Palestinian refugees in the Middle East, declared on Monday that it will provide 651 Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip with $3.2 million for reconstructing their homes that were destroyed by the last Israeli offensive in 2014.

In a statement released on Monday, UNRWA said that 651 families from different districts in Gaza will be able to claim the financial aids through local banks during the coming week, Ma’an news agency reported.

The statement added that the reconstruction of destroyed homes in Gaza is UNRWA’s major priority, and that the group “will stay committed to support families affected by Israeli aggression.”

The near decade-long Israeli blockade of the coastal enclave has impeded the capacity to repair Gaza’s damaged infrastructure in the wake of the devastating Israeli offensive in 2014.

The UN warned in 2015 that Gaza, which is home to more than 2 million Palestinians according to the latest estimates, could be “uninhabitable” by 2020. (T/RS05/RS01)
