Jeddah, 18 Jumadil Akhir 1437/28 March 2016 (MINA) – General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed the guilty verdict against former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war.

The United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia sentenced Karadzic to 40 years in prison, Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) quoted QNA as reporting.

The OIC General Secretariat, in a statement, described the conviction as an important step that would put an end to the impunity and achieve justice for the Muslims of Bosnia and the other victims who were subjected to mass killings and war crimes.

The General Secretariat also expressed hope that the other war criminals in the former Yugoslavia will be arrested.

The 70-year-old, who insisted his actions were aimed at protecting Serbs during the Bosnian conflict, was found guilty of 10 out of the 11 charges he faced at the international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Prosecutors said that Karadžić, as political leader and commander-in-chief of Serb forces in Bosnia, was responsible for some the worst acts of brutality during the war, including the 44-month deadly siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 massacre of more than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys in the Srebrenica enclave.  (T/R07/R01)
