Jakarta, 10 Jumadil Awwal 1437/18 February 2016 (MINA)  –  Indonesia is slated to inaugurate a honorary consulate in the West Bank city of Ramallah in a bid to forge a closer relationship with Palestine and show its seriousness in supporting the Palestinian struggle to establish an independent and sovereign state, a senior official said.

The Honorary Consulate of Indonesia in Ramallah will be unveiled on March 18, with Maha Abu Susheh, a local woman, being appointed as an honorary consul, Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir told Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta, Thursday (18/2).

The honorary consulate will be inaugurated by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on March 18, he said.

It  will be on duty to provide consular assistance to Indonesian citizens having problems in the region and to serve as a companion to the Indonesian Embassy in Amman, Jordan, which had been handling Indonesia’s affairs with Palestine.

The opening of the consulate was an improvement in the country’s efforts to assist Palestine’s capacity building.

It is not easy to appoint an ambassador there as the city is still  under Israeli military rule. The most realistic is honorary consulate in Ramallah, the de facto administrative capital of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).  (L/P008/R07)
