Gaza, MINA- Palestinian Ministry of Development and Social Affairs in Gaza Strip explains the poverty indicator in Gaza as the highest in the world.

In a press statement along with International Day for Poverty Eradication which is commemorated every October 17, indicators show that the poverty and unemployment rate in Gaza Strip in 2019 reached nearly 75 percent.

The efforts of government, international and local institutions are mostly public assistance that only meets about 50 percent of the basic needs of poor families in Gaza, as quoted from Palestinian Information Center (Palinfo) on Friday, October 18.

The ministry explained that the condition was mainly due to aggressive Israeli practices that had accumulated since the second intifada in 2000 blockade and seizure of livelihoods from thousands of Palestinian family heads.

“Palestinian economy cannot create new jobs to accommodate the currently untrained workers,” the statement said.

In addition to Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza Strip since 2006, by limiting the movement of citizens and goods, another cause was also three wars in 2008-2012-2014, plus complex and difficult political, economic, and social realities.

The ministry called for the need for humanitarian independence away from political intrigue, improving the living environment of people in Gaza Strip by opening crossings and allowing citizens and goods to move freely in Gaza without being restricted and monitored. (T/Sj/P2)
