Cairo, 6 Jumadil Akhir 1436/26 March 2015 (MINA) – March is a month often seen as dedicated to celebrate women in all their various incarnations around the world.

Three occasions related to female empowerment fall in the month: International Women’s day, Egyptian Women’s day and Mother’s Day.

However, women in Egypt remember these days with grave sadness at their new reality; a reality where hundreds of them find themselves as prisoners in Egyptian prisons, tortured and abused beyond comprehension, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

Al-Mesryoon reported that as many as 235 women have been arrested by the Egyptian security apparatus. The detainees were reported to have been tortured, abused, raped and had to experience the inhumane virginity tests by their jailers.

Earlier this year, Shaima Sabbagh, a human rights activist was gunned down by the Egyptian police before the eyes of the world when she along with her fellow members of the Socialist People’s Alliance Party walked to lay flowers in Tahrir Square in respect for all the young people who were killed to bring justice to Egyptians.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Nemaa Sayyed, who is currently being tried on alleged charges of inciting violence, begged the judge to sentence her to death to relief her from her suffering.

Sayyed was only a minor when she was arrested and tried, yet only three years later she has been transferred to a juvenile court to review her case. (T/P002/R03)
