Decisive Global Action Needed for Rohingya Crisis – OIC

Kuwait, MINA – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen, urged Thursday the European Union (EU) and United Nations (UN) agencies to take action to end the suffering of the Rohingya people of Myanmar.

OIC joined the international community in calling for recommendations of the Rakhine State Commission to be implemented, but these are long-term goals and there is an urgent and immediate need for lifesaving intervention, KUNA reported, citing Al-Othaimeen in a statement.

The Secretary General addressed High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (HR) Federica Mogherini, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR) Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein, and UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi in separate letters, calling for decisive steps to end the ongoing crisis in Rakhine State.

OIC is ready to provide humanitarian assistance, said Al-Othaimeen, calling Myanmar government to end the cycle of violence and inhumane treatment of the Rohingya people by finding solution for their legal status.

Since 2014, the OIC has warned that if the government of Myanmar continues to destroy homes, kill innocent civilians and humiliate entire population without any recourse to justice this will create a breeding ground for recruitment by extremists’ elements. (T/RS5/RS1)
