Jakarta, MINA – Indonesian Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning, Sofyan Djalil suggested that waqf could become productive waqf. Productive Waqf is meant to be used for the benefit of Ummah (people).

Sofyan explained that until this time, waqf was often used for specific purposes, such as for building mosques. In fact, the position of the mosque is not necessarily suitable for the next 15 years.

According to Sofyan, the most important thing for waqf or waqf provider is the spirit of waqf. Thus, he considered that productive waqf could be better used by many parties.

“For example, Muslim entrepreneurs don’t have capital, why don’t we just give waqf?” said Sofyan in Jakarta as quoted from Republika on Sunday.

Previously, the Indonesian Waqf Board (BWI) supported the government to improve the welfare of the community by using productive waqf. One form of productive waqf is lands for agricultural activities, shops for trading activities, and so on.

“Massive productive waqf development is expected to accelerate economic development and strengthen the stability of the national financial system. And it will improve the welfare of the community, “said Chairman of BWI, Mohammad Nuh. (T/Sj/P2)
