Most Human Trafficking Cases in the Fishing Industry

Jakarta, MINA – The United States Embassy (US) in Indonesia on Wednesday, August 7, held a discussion and screening of a documentary film entitled Ghosh Fleet which tells of human trafficking in the fishing industry.

The representative of the UN agency in Indonesia, Programme Assistant Support of International Organization for Migration (IOM), Shafira Ayunindya in the discussion stated the most human trafficking cases are in the Fishing Industry.

“In Indonesia, we provide assistance to more than nine thousand victims of human trafficking, 2600 of them are from the fishing industry. They are crews,” she said.

Meanwhile, Political officer of US embassy in Indonesia, Fausto DeGuzman also explained, every year the US embassy submits regular reports including on cases of human trafficking in various countries.

Senior journalist, Erwin Purba appreciated the documentary film. He said one of the tasks of journalism is to uncover social facts as lessons for the community.

Ghost Fleet film is a documentary work produced by investigative journalism. It tells the story of a Thai activist named Patima Tungpuchayakul who managed to save thousands of victims of slavery in the fishing industry in Thai companies. Thailand is the largest supplier of fish in the US.

The film is based on a true story and directed by Shannon Service and Jeffrey Waldron. From this film, viewers will learn about life’s inspiration from people who have experienced slavery for years. (T/Ais/P2)
