Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

Ramallah, MINA – President Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday that national unity will continue to be a primary goal for the Palestinian leadership because without it there will not be a Palestinian state, WAFA reported.

Speaking at the start of a meeting in Ramallah for his Fatah Central Committee, Abbas said that “national unity is a goal of high priority for us on which we attach wide and broad hope because without it there will not be a Palestinian state. God willing, there will be national unity and the Palestinian state will be established, and we pray to God to succeed in our mission.”

He added: “There is an important meeting in Cairo between Fatah and Hamas movements to lay the foundations and go into the specific details for the government takeover of power and the next steps. This requires effort, hard work and good intentions, and we hope that everyone will have these intentions.”

The Cairo meeting is scheduled to start on Tuesday.

Abbas said his Fatah Central Committee meeting was going to discuss progress in the reconciliation talks between Fatah and Hamas in the aftermath of Hamas’s decision to dissolve its administrative committee, which was in charge of running Gaza affairs, as well as going to presidential and legislative elections as well as elections for the Palestinian National Council, the Palestinian parliament in exile.

“The road is now open for talks on national unity, the details of which will be discussed at the meeting of the Fatah Revolutionary Council that will convene this evening,” Abbas said. (T/RS5/RS1)
