The Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called on the Israeli authorities to immediately cease all practices and procedures, and fully respect the sanctity of Al Aqsa Mosque,  WAM reported Wednesday..

The Secretary-General warned the danger of the Israeli escalation that began last Friday, which included deterring Muslims to practice their religious rituals, the closure of Al Aqsa Mosque,  preventing worshippers from performing Friday prayers, specifying a certain number of worshipers, and the installation of electronic gates at Al Aqsa entrances.

He pointed out that these measures represent a clear violation of international human rights law, where freely practising one’s religious rituals is one of its fundamental rights.

He explained that it would only lead to more tension, further fuelling the situation in Jerusalem. (T/RS5/RS1)
