PPS: WINTER STORM DEEPENS PRISONERS’ SUFFERING

Ramallah, 30 Rabi’ul Akhir 1436/20 February 2015 (MINA) – The Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) warned that the very cold weather has deepened the suffering of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails in light of lack of heating.

Following his visit to Ofer prison, the PPS lawyer pointed out that the detainees suffer from acute shortage of winter clothing and blankets along with Israeli ban on heating appliances, The Palestinian Information Center (PIC) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA), Friday.

The Israeli Prison Service (IPS) continued, in the meantime, its night raid and search campaigns into prisoners’ cells, most recently was the violent break-in into section 11 in Ofer prison, the lawyer said.

During the raid, prisoners were held handcuffed in bathrooms for long hours, he added.

The prisoners also pointed out that they are held in overcrowded cells that lack the basic health standards in addition to the erection of jamming devices that severely affect their health condition.

Palestine will be affected on Thursday evening by a very cold polar front and a depression that are expected to bring rain and heavy snow, Palestine Weather website revealed.

The impact of the polar front will intensify at dawn Friday as more cold winds blow towards the Palestinian territory, the site said, adding that temperatures will drop and the weather will be very cold with heavy rain and thunderstorms.(T/P008/R03)
