PALESTINIAN AMBASSADOR TO UN CALLS FOR ISRAEL TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE
Gaza, 27 Rabi’ul Awwal 1436/17 January 2015 (MINA) – Palestine representative to the United Nations Ambassador Riyad Mansour said the UN Security Council did not assume its responsibilities towards Palestine or implement its resolutions regarding the Israeli occupation.
“We should focus on applying the law and punishing those who violate it and remove any immunity from the occupation,” Mansour said during a Security Council emergency meeting on the Middle East.
He stressed that achieving just and comprehensive peace requires the application of the United Nations resolutions about Israel. Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting. Saturday.
He pointed out that borders between Israel and Palestine must be determined and UN resolutions must be complied with, whilst also calling for a just and comprehensive solution to the refugee crisis.
Mansour stressed that the establishment of a Palestinian state is a responsibility shared by the international community and the Security Council which should shoulder its duty in this regard.
“How can we stop our requests and calls to the international community while we suffer under the Israeli occupation? The Israeli leadership does not have a political decision to make peace.
It has never been held accountable for its actions, this pushes the region into the abyss,” he said.
He explained that Israel continues to terrorise the Palestinian people by military campaigns and arresting children and women, yet it has not been held accountable until this moment, noting that the humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip because of the Israeli aggression against the enclave in the summer is very large.
“Israel prevents entry of building materials, water and electricity to the Gaza Strip. This is all part of the crimes committed by the occupation in the Gaza Strip.
“The barbaric collective punishment of our people and withholding the Palestinian tax money is nothing but stealing the Palestinian people’s money which must be condemned by the international community,” said Mansour.
The Palestinian ambassador said the Palestinian Authority’s decision to join the International Criminal Court is among the first steps to hold Israel accountable for its actions, so it knows that no one is above the law.
Mansour asked if the international community will remain silent and for how long the Palestinians will have to wait for their independence. (T/P002/R04)
