Palace Declares June 26 a Holiday for Eid'l Fitr

Manila, Philippines, 22 Ramadan 1438/17 June 2017 (MINA) — Malacañang on Friday issued Proclamation No. 235 declaring June 26 a regular holiday in observance of the Muslim celebration of Eid’l Fitr, Philstar reported.

Under Republic Act 9177, Eid’l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadhan is a regular holiday throughout the country. Muslims celebrate Eid’l FItr for three days after the end of the month of fasting.

“Whereas, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr.

President Rodrigo Duterte, through Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, noted that it is necessary to declare June 26 a regular holiday to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Muslim celebration.

Article 169 of the 1977 Presidential Decree 1083 states that Eid al-Fitr is recognized as one of the legal Muslim holidays.

Employees who work on regular holidays are paid at least 200 percent of the sum of their daily rate and cost of living allowance, according to the Department of Labor and Employment. (T/RS5/RS1)
