Jakarta, MINA – Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) appreciates the decision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to recognize Palestine as a state.

This decision was taken at the 67th Annual General Conference of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) which took place in Vienna, Austria on 25-29 September 2023.

The 67th IAEA General Conference was attended by around 2,000 delegates from 177 member countries. The IAEA has voted on a draft resolution establishing a Palestinian state, especially the Arab Republic of Egypt, which submitted a request in the name of a Palestinian State.

This resolution was adopted after voting with a majority of 92 countries supporting it, including Indonesia, while 5 countries abstained and 21 countries rejected it.

Responding to this, the Chair of the MER-C Presidium, dr. Sarbini Abdul Murad expressed his appreciation. He also said that this was a victory for humanitarian diplomacy.

“We appreciate the decision of the IAEA and all IAEA members who have provided support for this resolution, including Indonesia which has consistently shown its support for the State of Palestine. “This is a victory for humanitarian diplomacy,” said Sarbini.

Sarbini further hopes that this step will be followed by other international institutions.

“This brave step must be followed by other international institutions as a form of world resistance to apartheid and colonialism, especially what Israel has carried out against Palestine,” he added. (T/RE1/P2)
