Masagos Zulkifli to Chair 5-Nation Meeting on Transboundary Haze

Singapore, 25 Rajab 1437/03 May 2016 (MINA) – The 18th meeting of the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee (MSC) on Transboundary Haze Pollution will be held in Singapore on May, and it will be chaired by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli.

In a press release on Tuesday (May 3), the ministry said the ministerial-level MSC comprises Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, Cna reported as quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).

The meeting will continue to review and enhance cooperative measures to monitor, prevent and mitigate smoke haze arising from land and forest fires in the five countries, it added.

The meeting is expected to discuss key issues pertaining to haze prevention measures in the five MSC countries, including the implementation of the ASEAN Sub-Regional Haze Monitoring System, mobilisation of international assistance to support fire-fighting efforts, and exchange of information among countries, the press release said.

Mr Masagos pointed to the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act (THPA) and said the National Environment Agency (NEA) sent Preventive Measures Notices under Section 9 of the Act to six companies based in Indonesia following last year’s haze episodes.

Of the six, two have responded and NEA is corresponding with them and verifying the information provided. (T/R07/R01)
