Indonesian Muslims to Hold Another Peace Rally over Al-Quran Blasphemy Case

Jakarta, 5 Sha’ban 1438/2 May 2017 (MINA) – The National Movement of the Fatwa Guards of the Indonesian Ulema Council (GNPF MUI) is planning to hold another peace rally in the capital city, Jakarta to demand a proper sentence to Basuki Tjahaya Purnama or Ahok in Al-Quran blasphemy case ..

This came after the prosecutor demanded a two-year probation sentence to the defendant with a possible one-year jail term if he commits a crime during that period is considered very disappointing to the Muslims.

The organisation also stated that it will hold long march from the Istiqlal mosque after Friday prayers to Supreme Court building.

“The long march to the Supreme Court office aims to convey the demands of the ummah so that the judges would dare to impose severe and fair punishment on the defendant, the movement said in a statement.

The controversy began in September when Ahok, known for his outspoken style, infuriated Muslims when he quoted a passage from the Al-Quran ahead of elections for the Jakarta governorship.

In a speech outside of the campaign period, Ahok has criticized that Al-Maidah verse 51 used to fool people not to reelect him in the gobernatorial election. (L / RE1/RS5)
