Jakarta, 26 Rajab 1437/04 May 2016 (MINA) – President Joko Widodo will visit Russia in the third week of May to participate in the Russia-ASEAN Summit and will witness the signing of an agreement to purchase eight 4.5-generation Sukhoi Su-35, a minister stated.

Speaking to journalists here, Tuesday, Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu affirmed that the plan to purchase eight 4.5-generation Sukhoi Su-35 jet fighters was made after Indonesia bought 24 Sukhoi 27/30 aircraft.

Prior to his visit to Russia to attend the Russia-ASEAN Summit in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, President Widodo will visit South Korea. The two-nation tour will be undertaken on May 16-20.

According to Salim Mengga, a member of the House of Representatives Commission I overseeing defense, foreign affairs and information, the purchase of Sukhoi Su-35 aircraft was aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Indonesian Defence Force.

Russian weapons are widely used by the Indonesian army. The country’s Air Force uses the Su-27 and Su-30 fighters. The Su-35 would replace the outdated American aircraft F-5 Tiger that has been used by the Indonesian military since 1980.

Fighting for the Indonesian order had been lasting for a couple of years. French Dassault “Rafale” and Eurofighter “Typhoon” had been actively promoted. The US supply Indonesia with the second-hand F-16 and is sure to be ready for the contract extension.

As per price and weight characteristics, the Swedish Saab “Gripen” was the best choice to replace the F-5E/F with.

However, the Russian Su-35 became Indonesia’s selection. (T/R07/R01)
