TPP NOT PROFITABLE FOR INDONESIA

Jakarta, 20 Muharram 1437/2 November 2015 (MINA) – Indonesia will gain no benefit by joining the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). Actualy it would only benefits United States (US) as the main initiator.

“The establishment of TPP which was led by US  is to compete against and hinder  the domination of China in Asia Pacific,” said Lutfia Hanim, a member of Indonesia for Global Justice (IGJ), during a discussion entitled ‘Dismantling the agreement of Trans Pacific Partnership in IGJ headquarters, Jakarta, Monday.

According to Lutfia, if Indonesia wants to join TPP, it will only harm  Indonesian economy that is already degrading. In the TPP, the contents of trade regulations among  state members will be notified four years after the MoU signing and negotiation.

“The text agreement of TPP, it is not circulated among new comers. Even the US House of Representatives  protested because they have not receive the points of agreement,” she said.

In addition, the characters of TPP is also very private and confidential. Only members of TPP that could find and open the agreement, non-members states are not allow to see it.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a proposed trade agreement among twelve Pacific Rim countries concerning a variety of matters of economic policy, about which agreement was reached on 5 October 2015 after 7 years of negotiations.

Historically, the TPP is an expansion of the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPSEP or P4), which was signed by Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, and Singapore in 2005.

Beginning in 2008, additional countries joined the discussion for a broader agreement: Australia, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, the United States, and Vietnam, bringing the total number of participating countries in the negotiations to twelve.(L/P008/R03/R03)
